I don’t watch that many animes so it was a bit hard to find 9 favorites.

  1. Dragon Ball Z : Was actually the first anime I ever watched so I have a lot of nostalgia to it. And Dragon Ball is one of my special interests
  2. Saint Seiya Hades : I have seen a good part of the original series as well but I remember this one more. The most impacting part for me were The awakening of the 8th sense + the entrance of the main crew in hell, Shun being possessed by Hades and Seiya dying at the end.
  3. Ōban Star-Racers : Very emotional for me. Also, my heart was broken each time the Wizzing Arrow (this ship was almost a character for me) was destroyed.
  4. Cyberpunk Edgerunners (the most recent one) : No one gets happy endings in Night City… and the animation is gorgeous !
  5. Pokémon XY and Pokémon XYZ : It takes place in France !!! And also the final fight was epic.
  6. Waga Seishun no Arcadia : Mugen Kidou SSX (Albator 84 in the french dub) : binged the entire show during a weekend
  7. Code Geass : I really like this anime when I was a kid but I didn’t watch it in its entirety, maybe I should re-watch it at some point.
  8. Spirited Away (Le Voyage de Chihiro in french dub) : mainly for the animation
  9. Princess Mononoke : mainly for the animation

And now some honorable mentions that I cannot technically put because I read the manga version of them :

  1. Fullmetal Alchemist : I had seen a bit of the anime that’s why I initially wanted to read the manga. Read at the school library.
  2. Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) : This one actually had a big impact on 16y/o me. Read at the school library.
  3. Initial D : This one during the period when I was really into racing games and I initially bought them because of the memes but I really liked it, I read it up to volume 24 currently. Bought them myself.
  4. Saint Seiya : I had also seen a sizable chunk of the original series as well as Saint Seiya Hades and Seiya Soul of Gold in their entirety so I bought a few volumes of the deluxe edition, I have 9 volumes currently. Bought them myself.

presented in no particular order (except revstar, which gets the coveted center spot)

From left to right, top to bottom:

1. Bocchi The Rock!

I’m always brought straight to pieces by stories about people just doing their best, and seeing Bocchi overcome her crippling anxiety for the sake of music, ego, and (most importantly, of course) her friends makes me cry every time. Chose the picture of the album cover because the anime really is full of bangers and the full album contains songs that didn’t make it into the show (Flashbacker in particular is probably my favorite original track on the album)

2. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Truly no one has done it like Evangelion, even to this day. Being human is constantly pushing and pulling on the other humans around you, and few series explore that so fully as NGE. It’s also a work in conversation with itself, its viewers, and the nature of itself as a piece of media which has been remade multiple times. Picture is a cover for 3.0 + 1.0 because I love how it tied everything together

3. Monogatari

NisiOisiN constantly breaks the traditional rule of “show, don’t tell” and somehow makes it pay off by constantly presenting compelling philosophy, characters, and humor. The team at Shaft elevates that writing through clever editing, having characters act out the emotional truth of the moment instead of the literal sitting and talking. Its particular brand of editing is extraordinarily rarified to the point I don’t think I’ve ever seen another series do anything similar, except some of the cutscenes in Signalis. Picture is of Kaiki monologuing because I especially love his arc in Koimonogatari and his philosophy regarding imitation and fakery

4. I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying

Cute, funny, and punchy in the way most 4-koma adaptations are. I think about the wholesome moments in this show a lot, maybe since it’s one of the first series I watched and rewatched back when I primarily watched anime via youtube reuploads. Picture is of the end of a particularly emotional episode in the first season that can still consistently bring out the waterworks.

5. Revue Starlight

The 12-episode anime run alone would crack my top 10 list, but the movie catapults revstar to queen of my heart status. Each time I rewatch the revstar movie I find a new place to cry at, a new line to become obsessed with. Revstar became my entire life for half a year after I watched it. The music and visuals, individually but especially in conjunction, are uniquely affecting. In breaking the traditional rule of “don’t have speaking lines and lyrical music at the same time” Revstar opens up unique writing opportunities in which songs can both emphasize and betray a character’s true feelings and motivations in a way that makes my heart skip a beat. Picture is of the gayest thing I’ve seen two characters do in an anime that’s safe for work.

6. Sousou no Frieren

Japanese title due to untranslatable pun. Clever lore regarding magic, positively enchanting setting, and, of course, wonderfully interesting characters all around, including throwaway characters in the tournament arc. Few fantasy series can muster even half the energy Frieren seems to wield effortlessly. Complemented by beautifully kinetic animation and Evan Call’s masterful compositions (you’ll recognize him if you’re a fan of Violet Evergarden) Frieren scored itself a permanent place close to my heart. Picture is of Fern being an absolute badass because holy shit she’s so cool.

7. Cowboy Bebop

Everything that could possibly be said about cowboy bebop has been said before. It’s really good. Picture is of the cast being silly. I love these boisengirls.

8. Serial Experiments: Lain

There’s a lot of series that get credit for being “prophetic” in one way or another, but Lain deserves more credit for basically entirely predicting the way our digital selves and the internet would meld with each other. Surreal, observant, and beautiful, Lain is a true classic. Picture is of my room once I finally buy a house

9. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

I am obsessed with whatever the hell is going on in Homura’s brain. I mean, it’s probably just the word “Madoka” repeating over and over but. You know. Hyped for the movie this year. Love the mixed media animation the series has going on the whole time. My favorite character after Homura is Sayaka, I love her conflict regarding selfless good. Picture is of one of my favorite scenes in Rebellion.

Honorable mention

Goes to Machikado Mazoku which features one of my favorite couples and has great gags. I aspire to contain half the chaotic energy that Lico wields.

Just saw this thread and think it might be interesting to revive it since I saw some talk in dc about anime about 12 hrs ago.

Top Left: WorldEnd: What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us?

I might be heavily biased both in "nostalgia" (It only has been seven years since it came out but idk what to call it) and having read the light novels. But I really like many things about it. Especially its setting. (Many different races living together on flying islands because of beasts on the ground) Would recommend reading the light novels over the anime since I personally think that the best parts of the story are not part of the anime. (5+1 Light novels (1 Extra) and only first 3 Light novels for anime adaptation)

Top Center: Madoka Magica

Got already mentioned often enough in here and I don't have any thing to add

Top Right: Yurikuma Arashi

Totally Yuri! But a weird watch since it has a really confusing start and basically doesn't have a story (so without interpretation it would be mostly non-sense) but I like its use of symbols, metaphors etc. (From the creator of Utena) So I'd only recommend it for everyone that likes more abstract stuff. Probably needs a TW since it contains some sexualized (I hope that is the correct word for this) or erotic scenes.

Center left: Kaguya-sama love is war

Really liked the way it tackled issues in society (sometimes satirically) while still having a good and logical story.

Center Center: AngelBeats
One of the few anime that got me close to crying during a time where I hadn't cried for years.I really liked its story. Sadly found its ending quite disappointing.

Center Right: Happy Sugar Life

It's a slightly fucked up one with mostly characters that have some psychological quirks. (To say it in nice words) So also should add a TW since it's more in the psychological horror direction and contains some gore. I really like that it just has such an interesting way with the characters.

Bottom center: Fate stay night heavens feel

I personally like this more than unlimited blade works since I really like stories that tackle darker/more serious topics. And like always with Ufotable the animation is absolutely peak.

Bottom right: Oshi no ko

I can´t really put into words what exactly I like about this show. Probably just everything even if it still has many problems.

oh, sukasuka! i do remember liking that series, had completely forgotten about it

One of the funny things about this 3x3 is that this is actually all that i've ever watched as of right now (which i still remember to be citing something about)

, so there is animes which i despise in this tier list:

1 - Violet Evergarden
Its just good, really good. Doesn't feel like there is any filler or "something to buy more time" which i appreciate (and is my main problem with some of the animes that i've watched UHUM LOOKING AT YOU FRIEREN

I really like the movie, in my humble opinion i think its better then the series, i got weirded out by the ending but i understood it eventually, i think. The special episode is really amazing, just good good good.

2 - SPY x Family
The best comedy with drama that i've ever watched in general. I think it has a completely awesome balance between taking itself seriously, but not too much, and silly, but not too much. Which makes you both interested in the story enough to follow it, and getting some good laughs. And really solid as well!

3 - Howl's Moving Castle
The story is kind of cliche, but when you think about it cliches are based on older stories, so this is the cliche which cliches originated from. And in general its a really good movie.

4 - My Oni Girl
I took a watch already thinking i wouldn't like it as i wasn't that found of romances (mainly because the ones that my mother watches and i watched with her i HATED), but this movie just broke that prejudice of mine, at least in parts.

Its good! I like the story, feels pretty concise, and in general just ups. Doesn't ambition a lot and delivers what it promises, so who am i to judge?

5 - Frieren: The End of the Journey
I watched only the first season as of right now, but i really like and really hate some aspects of this anime.
The first half is really good on tempo and an amazing story. But then after [REDACTED] happens it appears like you're watching Dragon Ball Z all back again and seeing the fight of Goku and Vegeta. It isn't bad to that point but the break of flow which feels odd. It isn't bad by any means (i really liked it) but it seems like it could be a lot more resumed and being in similar tempo to the first part, and its only there to make filler for a contract or something.

But it's good, not amazing good but i liked it and i'm happy, althought WHYYYY DO I NEED TO HAVE DRAGON BALL FLASHBACKS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

6 - Cowboy Bebop
My decision right here is heavily being biased by one of my favorite artists/youtubers (GEMAPLYS/yun li) being an avid watcher of Cowboy Bebop, but i genuinely like it as well.

One of the things that wins to me is the Brazilian Voice Aciting, ITS REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY GOOD AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (genuinely), there was some quite famous voice actors in the Brazilian scenario, but still i find it amazing :+1:

7 - Madoka Puella Magica Girls
I wachted the series and i think one of the movies a long time ago. I don't have a lot to add but its alright, who knew that this movie would have psychological horror in form of rocks that little girls would get

8 - Evangelion
I didn't liked Evangelion, at least i didn't liked it that much. I watched the series and the first movie and to be honest i still prefer the final of the series as:

Evangelion spoilers

The anime has the haha funny big robot go KABOOOM for more of the first part, which eventually transitions to a depressive hellhole involving Shinji and angels and idontfuckingknowhat, which is an amazing idea but it felt kind of off how that transition went.

And to me the anime finale with the eerie and dystopic congratulations i find as a better kick off then what the movie gave, i guess that's just personal preference? But anyway i didn't get hooked into Evangelion that much, i can understand why people like it but it just feels off to me. Specially as WHY THE FUCK THERE IS OBSCENE SCENES BECAUSE THEY ARE.

Nudity is a valid way of telling stories, Peaky Blinders has some quite considerable amount of sex/nude scenes but it is justifiable in the entristic mafiose-gang-neoroyal world that Peaky Blinders ins built upon, and it isn't in any way a glorification of those acts (A LOT MORE TO THE CONTRATY, MIND YOU), and like some scenes i can understand why, but others just feels like it is there because it is there.

9 - Mushoku Tensei
Why are we still here? Just to suffer? To cry and sob in the bed? I don't like it, i would write an 20 page essay as to why, but not right now, at least. I don't mind if you/it do, but i just don't like in a personal level and its fine :/

I watched the anime for Komi can't communicate and Bocchi the rock and although I do like both it feels like a bit of a cop out that Komi is this goddess-on-Earth universally loved girl and ppl are supposed to relate to her struggles

Still have to finish it, but from what i watched (i think like 2/3 or something similar), definitely felt like a lot of other aspects an over exaggeration which actually tackles on a really interesting thing.

That form of overaprecciation, of elevating her to a literal goddess status represents (in a exaggerated way, of course) how "being too much good at X" or "being know as the X person/entity" can and in the series is an unintentional alienation.

She is such a goddess and no one even dares to talk to her because she is so pretty and amazing and blablablabla. Which is why Tadano going on to be the only person who is realistic with Komo actually interacts with her. I kind of disliked this choice but i think that it really plays off in showing that social anxiety isn't restrained to a specific stereotype of person, and you can topple off in any metric and still suffer from it.

Is it too exaggerated? Maybe, but the entire anime is in that vibe so i can't really judge on that

  1. One Piece! Pretty iconic and I don't think anything from this list has made me laugh or cry as much as it has
  2. Dorohedoro! I can't really recommend this if body horror makes you squeamish but it's hilarious and the characters are great
  3. Dandadan! I'm OBSESSED with this show
  4. A Sign of Affection! A really, really cavity inducingly sweet show with amazing characters. The main character is deaf from birth and it's a love story about communication surrounding that; Her hearing aids are baked into her character design and I feel like everything is done in a very cute and respectful way :sob:
  5. Serial Experiment Lain! Iconic, will always associate the buzzing sound of electricity with this show
  6. Beastars! It's weird! But it's a weird I can get behind
  7. Mr. Villain's Day Off! It's super cute and the humor is pretty amazing
  8. Kill la Kill! The music SLAPS and the characters are great
  9. Ouran High School Host Club! I was pretty obsessed with this when I was in high school and I think the story still holds up today

Top four are definitely my favorites at the moment

Think I missed this thread. Was really hard to narrow it down, but I think I'm happy with this:

(numbering is left-to-right, top-to-bottom)

  1. Mushi-shi - This is absolutely unique, both in setting and pacing. If you want a (literal?) healing anime to relax to, I can't recommend it enough. It's a collection of single-episode stories following the same character as he travels through Japan of long-ago, and helps people with supernatural problems along the way. It's very relaxed, but also melancholy at times. A perfect show to watch before bed.

  2. Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live - Anime for little girls, literally, but unlike a lot of the idol~dancing~fashion anime that came after it, it actually has a compelling story.

  3. Minami-ke - My personal #1 slice-of-life comedy, even the rather cursed 2nd season. It just seems to strike that perfect balance of comfy and comedy. Also, it has Hosaka.

  4. Kemurikusa - The Kemono Friends author's other anime. Post-apocalyptic future wandering and survival. I love the atmosphere, and the janky cg animation is quite endearing.

  5. Monogatari - I started watching it because of the pictured character, and am only up to Owarimonogatari, but I've loved it so far. Second Season was amazing. The show has a lot of fanservice, but for the most part, it doesn't come off as crass, and I didn't feel like it detracted from it.

  6. Golden Kamuy - It's the turn of the 20th century. It's Hokkaido. It's cold. Lovable characters, wintry atmosphere, and a novel Russo-Japanese War + Japanese/Ainu setting. Also, it has [not a spoiler]hot guys[/not a spoiler].

  7. Macross 7[1] - Kind of a standin for Macross as a whole, but it's my favorite of the bunch. To summarize Macross, it'd be Idols (and rock bands?), transforming fighter jet mecha, and giant transforming space battleships. Oh, and love triangles. Listen to my song!

  8. Tantei Opera Milky Holmes - Defective detectives fighting equally defective phantom thieves. It has a self-awareness that I found immensely funny. Also, nothing past season 2 exists.[2]

  9. Slayers - Swords and sorcery fantasy comedy. Lina Inverse, self-proclaimed genius pretty-girl sorceress, adopts a himbo and goes on a magical-OSHA-non-compliant adventure. This was one of my more formative shows, and it's very dear to my heart.

  1. a total coincidence this ended up as #7 ↩︎

  2. season 4 is ok, but season 3 (Futari Wa Milky Holmes) is awful, not even in a "so bad it's good" way ― i'm not even sure it'd be worth a drinking game ↩︎

oh god, i haven't watched a new anime in a really long time so most of what i like are "older" anime in no particular order. i absolutely had to chime in because no one has mentioned my favorite anime yet! my favorite genres include horror, post apocalypse, psychological, drama, action and suspense. i go for shorter anime because i have ADHD that means keeping up with something too much longer is a challenge most of the time. putting together this list, I decided to try to choose mostly ones i hadn't seen mentioned yet.

general tws for all of them: violence often senseless or forced/coerced, often involving guns, blood, some to a bit of gore, some of them involve animals getting injured, some of them involve children (or perceived children) murdering people/one another. state violence, oppression, sometimes genocide
EDIT: more specific tw's below, contain spoilers AND are not necessarily comprehensive but i did my best without rewatching them first. DM me if you have a specific thing but want to watch one.

  1. Wolf's Rain (2003), 26 episodes -- my all time favorite anime with a character who i've had a massive gay crush on for like 15 years, and another who gives me gender feels. what do you have to lose? please watch it. SOME FLASHING
tw: alcohol abuse, animal abuse & death, bugs, eye mutilation, child death, car accident, guns, genocide, state sponsored violence, animal....testing(?)/torture
  2. Death Parade (2015), 12 episodes -- second favorite anime, it means the world to me. talks about death, morality, the nature of humanity and reincarnation and what people "deserve".
tw: creepy marionette dolls, LOTS of blood/gore/violence, death, domestic violence, on screen sexual assault, stalking, alcohol, eye mutilation
  3. Gunslinger Girl (2003), 13 episodes -- little girls given cybernetic enhancements become trained assassins, tragic as shit.
tw: guns, coerced violence, state sponsored violence, child abuse, discussion of child sexuality but not in a pedophilic way iirc, amnesia, implied death of children
  4. Another (2012), 12 episodes -- high school students start dying in tragic ways on screen and have to figure out why and which one of them is to blame
tw: child violence, death of children and adults, paranoia, animal death, bugs, death and mutilation in basically every way dm me if you need a specific question answered this one is rough, murder, gore, sexualization of minors
  5. Hellsing (2001-2002), 13 episodes -- vampires, vampire hunting and the things that entails. also the main character is a trip. FLASHING.
tw: cop main characters, implied SA, gore, violence, mutilation, suicide, FLASHING, guns, sexualization
  6. Darker than Black (2007), 25 episodes -- post war sci-fi fantasy world where people get interesting super powers, USAmerica has lost global power, follows an assassin around tokyo. SOME FLASHING
tw: war, plane crash, suicide, magic and gun violence
  7. No. 6 (2011), 11 episodes -- gays and a guy who can talk to rats
tw: capitalism, caste system, war, state sponsored violence,
  8. Supernatural (2011), 22 episodes OVA -- exactly what you think it is. anime adaptation of the infamous show
tw: guns, supernatural violence, death, gore, alcohol, sexualization iirc, dead animals
  9. Cowboy Bebop (1998-1999), 26 episodes -- you know her, you love her, she's a classic i've revisited a few times. SOME FLASHING. TRANSMISOGYNY & SW OBJECTIFICATION. LGBT DEATH.
tw: guns, violence, gore, drug and alcohol use/abuse, bounty hunters, someone puts a cockroach in a drink at one point, sexual assault, violence, eye and other mutilation, a couple children die, clowns, suicide, ptsd, nudity

  1. Code geass: my first anime and I have been struggling to reach that high again for almost 10 years now and still never have also banger 1st opening

  2. The eminence in shadow: tired of all this boring isekai where the MC is strong for no reason great because this is the funniest show mocking that exact thing but doing everything better (except the harem that could leave)

  3. Full metal alchemist brotherhood: Basic pick but it is really good

  4. No game no life: 12 episodes of nonstop action would be my favorite show with out the horny I have rewatched at least 20+ times because of short length

  5. Violet Evergarden: are you looking to feel emotion well this one will hit you like a train 10/10 would cry again

  6. Bocchi the rock: SHE LIKE ME JUST LIKE ME FRFRFRFRFRFRFRFR!

  7. The weakest tamer began a journey to pick up trash: (yes that's the name get over it) a small girl is cast out and forced to live alone and slowly learns kindness and just want to hug her ;-; she is so precious
(also she pretends to be a boy go crazy with that one)

  8. Tomo chan is a girl: (I need a gamer tomboy GF) cute romance that actually ends in one season no way

  9. Vinland saga: epic viking show and than season 2 made the "I have no enemies" meme

  3. Love is War - good anime :+1:
  4. Love Live Nijigasaki - Gay
  5. Bloom Into You - GAY AAUHFGDB
  6. Yuru Camp - Lovely slice of life (: Hits the brain good
  7. Bocchi the Rock - gay good anime :+1:
  8. Sakura Trick - gay- Good entry level yuri but could do without a large amount of sus noises and camera angles sometimes. Literally just girls kissing and stuff
  9. A Certain Scientific Railgun - Uhh, worldbuilding's great, can be gay? Kinda? I enjoyed the slice of life quite a bit but it's been a few years since I watched it. More of a action anime though which is fair but not to my exact taste.

I blurred the spoilers, not that there was anything rlly spoilery. I also haven't touched any of the manga [2]

1 - Haikyuu: When people ask me my favourite anime ever I tell them Haikyuu. I don't know what my favourite really is but I love Haikyuu so it's a valid answer. Very good characters, lots of amazing memorable moments and I love volleyball. Also has my personal favourite visuals of any anime for the first 3 seasons, ridiculously high attention to detail. Oikawa my glorious GOAT. [3]

2 - Hunter x Hunter: This list isn't ordered, this is not my second favourite. Nen is a great power system, Chimera ant arc is awesome. Typical enough shonen but has cool ideas and great execution. Good music.

3 - Jojos bizzare adventure: Idk man just watch it I can't help you, I love this stupid fucking show. Man in the Mirror is a top 5 strongest stand argue with a wall

4 - Jujustu Kaisen: Same boat as HxH, good shonen but has a bit more of a focused plot. The second season of the anime has 2 arcs that are both absolutely incredible. The ending to season two however, I found very disappointing.

5 - Violet Evergarden: Incredible, makes me want to write. Hits every emotional beat it wants to, made me cry. The I am burning scene broke me and the whole part with the writer :smiling_face_with_tear:

6 - Neon Genesis Evangelion: By far the most "Hm OK, I'm just gonna accept this confusion" show I've ever seen. Art direction is rlly good, just a well put together show and I like that it's not so :boom::boom::boom::bangbang:all the time, like so many shows are today [4]

7 - Freiren, beyond journey's end: When I heard the synopsis of this anime I assumed it would have a lot of heavy existential themes, it disappointed me at first. But this show is actually full of hope and positive messages without shying away from reality. Watch this show

8 - Bocchi the rock!!: I honestly like this show less than ppl might think I do, considering I set up a watchalong [5]. Very positive vibes, so simple and just nice. Love the characters and attention to detail is yummy. [6] Season 2 when

9 - Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood: I almost forgot about this show, one of the best I've seen. Slow start but once it gets going it's good all the way to the end. Good plot, good characters, good scenes and memorable moments. Good in all ways. Good show :+1:

  1. Oh no I'm boring! ↩︎

  2. because I am a toddler and need flashing colours at all times ↩︎

  3. Silly fact, Naruta, Karasuno's mega unimportant middle blocker, has never been shown to fail at anything on screen in the anime, probably because he has done like 3 things but still 100% success rate at everything ↩︎

  4. It is still like that at times, but because it's often low energy those moments hit better ↩︎

  5. Rip my fuck ass laptop :sob: thank you Alu+Gort for carrying ↩︎

  6. I hate when ppl sexualise these characters, especially Bocchi, Bocchi is 15 ↩︎

I am looking for some chill anime for relaxing and getting into anime watching. Tho I would also like if it was like autism friendly, coz with most media I struggle with character emotions and stuff like that and it is tiring, but some animes are made in a way that all is well explained. So something in that manner

If you haven't seen it already, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End hits all those points you just said.

YOU STOLE MY SUGGESTION

I second Freiren, it is a lot about characters emotions but they mostly explain them. The main character struggles to understand humans sometimes so yeag. Also just super duper pretty and lovely and an amazing show and I love it

thought about watching it, so mayby this will be the choice
