Violet Evergarden is such a beautiful story. Really related to Violet’s struggles to find her identity and place in the world. Episode 10 is probably the best single episode of anything I’ve ever watched, absolutely bawled my eyes out.

Have you read the manga for Dorohedoro? Easily one of the best I’ve read, amazing world, characters, and vibes.

I’ve not heard of vampire in the garden at all, can you tell me a bit about it?

I haven’t, I’m not big on reading :) But I’ve seen some panels from the manga, the art style is really cool!

Vampire in the Garden is a very short anime (I think it only has 4 episodes or so) about a human girl who befriends a vampire woman, despite living in a world in which both species are at war with each other. It’s a sad story :D and the final episode is garbage </3 It suffers from “not enough time and money to finish it properly” syndrome

Fair enough, it’s annoying that it and most other manga will never be fully adapted.

Not enough time and money, the true tragedy.

I’ve only seen a bit of princess principal but I really enjoyed the vibes and the mc.

It’s good to see fellow Violet Evergarden enjoyer. “Filler” episodes in VE are a controversy, but I think they are really important for story and Violet’s character development. I also really like Made in Abyss, it almost got into my 3x3 after I watched S2. Kevin Penkin did an awesome job making its soundtrack. I cry every time I hear “Old stories” because of how much pain this song contains. Btw, Baccano and Yuru Camp are based picks.

I feel like music was a significant factor for you to decide what shows to put on 3x3. I mean, like, Madoka, KlK, Edgerunners, Doroherodoro and Princess Principal all have at least decent soundtrack. I really like what (K)NoW_NaME are doing, their music for Grimgal of Ashes and Dreams is amazing. Princess Principal has one of the best openings I have ever heard.

The soundtracks of Madoka Magica and Princess Principal were made by the same composer by the way, Yuki Kajiura! :D

OH! I love Yuki Kajiura! They did the sound tracks for most of the .hack series, which I adore. I didn’t know they did the soundtrack for Madoka Magica. No wonder I like that sound track a lot.

The first seasons of Violet Evergarden and Made in Abyss are oddly very linked in my head. I think it’s cus the both started around the same time, and both have a predictable but impressive emotional peaks, only to later hit you with a much higher peak now that your guard was down.

Kevin Penkin absolutely knocked it out of the park with the Made in Abyss ost, so haunting yet so beautiful. After watching the Dawn of the Deep Soul movie I freaked when I realised all of the songs to do with Bondrewd were supported by a childrens choir. Such a dark and clever detail. I wonder how many more details like that I’ve missed.

I think Yuru Camp came out not too long after too, and it was a great thing to recover with lmao such comfy vibes.

The Apothecary Diaries
I love MaoMao. Definitely largely relate to just being a menace and snacking on poison for fun if that was my job (thankfully my brain is not meant for that field).
FMA:B
While I still haven’t watched the original in full to compare, I do adore the worldbuilding and characters.
Madoka
So, uh… This was one of the first anime I watched as a kid. Definitely informed my taste early on.
Frieren
It’s just really good. I’ve been reading the manga more than watching the anime since that’s easier for me to keep up with, but either way there’s a lot of love put into it and it shows.
From the New World
An early favorite, and yet to be dethroned as my favorite of all time (even with one noticeably bad episode in the middle). The novel is also a good read, imo.
GitS
I’ve been wanting to rewatch this lately. The robot designs are super nice, and it’s
FLCL
Yes. Have not watched any of the recent follow-ups yet, but am planning to do a binge at some point.
Monogatari (series)
More importantly, Nisio Isin’s writing and the Shaft adaptations. I do enjoy the worldbuilding behind the problem solving, but the presentation is what hooked me more than the characters or fanservice ever did.
Terror in Resonance
I feel like I would need to sit down and write my thoughts on this while rewatching to get it coherent, but it was formative for me.
Honorary mention to Redline, my favorite anime movie ever. Might replace Monogatari, but it’s really hard to pick which makes the cut.
Also honorary mention to Call of the Night. I think I enjoy the manga slightly more as it can exist silently, but the VA work and having Creepy Nuts for the songs is a very strong argument.

somehow managed to copy the table of comments from my notes. hopefully that’s still readable once i post it.

  8. Steel Ball Run (Not an anime yet but I just really enjoy it.)
  9. Insomniacs After School

Honorable Mentions: Gurren Lagann, A Silent Voice, and Soul Eater

I really enjoy the Bocchi the Rock! manga, its a breath of fresh air to have a ultra shy protagonist which isnt actually the perfect typical lovely person who just needs a tiny bit more confidence, but actually a genuine weirdo. Fav character is defs Ryo Yamada, they give of cool enby vibes that I strive for

I totally forgot about Jojo when picking my 9, all round banger series.
Yo some Insomniacs After School love! Another manga I love, it features similar embracing of the cool night vibes as Call of the Night, but personality I think its much much better. Amazing art, vibes, and characters, my fav being Yui Shiromaru who again gives off cool enby vibes I aspire to

Also very asd coded, they know what they like and enjoy it without giving a hoot about what anyone thinks. Can come across as unsocial but actually they crave friends and connections but are just not very good at finding and making them.

I need to make sure to read the Bocchi the Rock manga. I have only seen the anime so far. But I’m really enjoying it.
I’m happy to see another fan of Insomniacs After School. I feel like it was kind of overshadowed by other romance anime in the same season. I haven’t finished the manga yet. I’m at chapter 88. I really enjoy the characters and the romance. I really like how it doesn’t to include any love triangles or drama like that, but focus on people connecting with each other over shared experience and interests both romantically and not. Also, Shiromaru really is the best.
Also, I like JoJos probably too much. I love Part 7–particularly Johnny and Gyro. Also this…
idk if it counts a spoiler

oh, this reminded me i had a few chapters of Insomniacs After School to read! i also didn’t know it had gotten an anime adaptation, so i’ll have to check that out at some point. always sad when i hit the end of a good series (Land of the Lustrous is ending in april, too, and i am Not Ready…)

Bocchi is also a really great anime. the manga is good as well, but after the anime hit (i think) episode 8, i had to sit down and write out a whole bunch of words about it. there are a lot of moments that hit really hard for my own experience with music, and the animators poured a ton of personality into the anime on top of the performances. ryo my beloved.
