I forgot about Cowboy Bebop. I haven’t watched in a while. But the atmosphere and music are stunning. The characters are so good-- especially Ed. It was really sad when everyone starting leaving towards the end of the show. But I definitely should have put it on my 3x3.

Since you put Sailor Moon S. I thought you may enjoy this. I don’t know where to post this but an artist I really like–Ginger Root-- made a sick version of the moon prism power make up theme. He does like indie pop (he calls it Aggressive Elevator Soul). And I have been rocking out to it for a while and thought you may enjoy it. so here’s a link.

oh that’s super nice actually, i’ll have to borrow that descriptor for next time i recommend his stuff. i keep forgetting soundcloud exists to browse anything, but coming across Loneliness last year was a very good find.

on the topic of Bebop, i’m curious how people’s opinions here have changed on dubbed or subbed anime over the years, and what you all started with. i didn’t know english subtitled anime were a thing for a solid 6 months after i picked up…what was the first non-pokemon i watched, Fairy Tail? but i swapped over to subs pretty quickly since i wanted to learn japanese in a manner that didn’t talk about wine and beer and businesses.

  • small tangent again but Pimsleur was the first learning resource my dad used for japanese, and i listened in to a lot of the CDs, but it really struck me even as a kid how little it was actually teaching.

i’ve watched most of the anime on my 3x3 subbed, but some i’ve done both subbed and dubbed so growing up through the ‘war’ between those preferences was really odd!

This list is in no order!

  1. Spider Riders, I technically havent finished it but the seirese has some sort of magnetic draw on me
  2. Vision of Escaflowne, A wonderfully animated mecha show, with fantasy stuff. Really really pretty, and pretty nice story.
  3. Fruits Basket (2011), even though this never finished the story, I prefer it to the modern version that is finished, the animation quality may be a tad bit worse, but the pacing, atmosphere and OST are all way better (I still have some of the ost on my zune…)
  4. Digimon Tamers, written by Chiaki J. Konaka, the guy who did Serial Experiments Lain, which might take this spot if i ever get around to watching it. Kinda a slow start but most digimon fans regard this as one of the best for good reason, the aesthetics are great and the story is too.
  5. Super Cub, Love how this is drawn, and it really, really makes me want to get a motorcycle…
  6. Hunter x Hunter, I feel like this is kinda obligatory, it’s really good.
  7. Night on the Galactic Railroad, The last three of these are movies because I can’t think of 9 shows… but Night on the Galactic Railroad is an extremely beautiful movie, and everyone should watch it… There is also an official Esperanto version for you conlang fans
  8. Pom Poko, Easily my favorite Studio Ghibli, I first watched this in history class in 10th grade over like… 4 classes? Wonderful movie…
  9. Dragon’s Heaven, Short little OVA, The mecha are awesome, and the models they made for the intro must have taken up so much money. Very very pretty and cute.

I read a little bit of Super Cub, I enjoy anything that tries to capture the wonderful world riding opens up for you. (I will shill bicycles till the cows come home, will have to try motorbikes some time in my life too).
A recommendation I can give that is similarish vibes but not as centred around riding is Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō. I have only read the manga but there are some animated ova’s of it too. It has impeccable vibes and I think a lot of people here would like it.

I haven’t heard of Dragon’s Heaven, sounds cool and I love a bit of mecha so I’ll have to check it out!

I have read “Insomniacs after School” a few months ago. Since I have read all notable Makoto Ojiro’s works, I can say that every work of her has questionable ending. I mean, IaS would have been better without drama around Isaki as the title has already looked deep enough imo. Btw, Shiromaru is the best.

Defs agree with you there, but at least there is enough good so far with it to enjoy it.
It gives my joy to see more Shiromaru appreciators

I don’t really watch anime anymore except for some casual slice-of-life, but I still hold my favorites very close to my heart, so here it goes!

  • K-On
  • Nichijou
  • Yuru Camp
  • Hunter x Hunter
  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • Soul Eater
  • Katanagatari
  • Monogatari Series
  • (Manga) Soranin

Apart from these I really love studio ghibli movies they resonate in me a lot, specially Totoro and Ponyo!

I am a yuri fan what can I say
1: Bloom Into You (My #1 on this list, read the whole manga after seeing the anime, really tender and sweet)
2: Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken (About making anime, really funky stylistically)
3: Madoka Magica (What do I need to say, it’s a classic)
4: Princess Tutu (Strong predecessor to Madoka)
5: Revue Starlight (Weaker than Madoka, but still a good girls’ love story)
6: Flip Flappers (See above)
7: Spice and Wolf (Merchants & Romance! Cool premise, worked well for me, really a classic)
8: Gurren Lagann (Messed up the ending, but really delivered on going Beyond The Impossible)
9: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (A classic.)

Mononoke Hime: Loved it as a kid and is still my favorite Ghibli movie. Nice message of if you disrespect nature too much it’s going to come back to haunt you. Also I love how the Shishigami looks. The Kodama are cute, too! Sousou no Frieren: This show catapulted itself up to my favorites immediately. Almost all the episodes move me to tears. I connect to Frieren emotionally a lot and I think about why a lot, too. I have some guesses.(I watched it twice already, currently reading the manga) Chihayafuru: Amazing 3 Seasons of Anime. It’s basically somewhat of a sports anime. They play Karuta a sort of card game where someone reads a poem and the competitors need to find to grab the correct card. It’s honestly a cool game, It seems simple, but isn’t really. It is beautifully animated and I love the characters. Very strong encouragement to give it a shot (or read the manga)
Hyouka: Comfy anime about solving minor everyday riddles with cute characters. I love Eru so much <3. I even ended up reading fan translations of the novels. Ghost in the Shell (1995): Love GitS in general but the original movie is still my favorite. I watched it a lot and I just love it. The original mangas are good too. Shinsekai yori: Hard to talk about without spoiling anything. So I just say it gets dark and has surprising twists that change the perspective on the whole world it plays in.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica: I mean this show influenced so much media and popularised the dark inversion of Magical girls. I especially like the third movie. Serial Experiments Lain: When I watched it as a teen I only got the general gist of it. Watching it later made me understand a lot more, but every rewatch reveals more nuance that I never picked up. If you like this I would encourage you to also play the PS1 game which was made alongside this show (only released in Japan, but there is a fan-translated web reimplementation you can play. Can share a link if someone is curious). The story is completely different but also very intriguing. Deals with very heavy topics, though. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya: Nostalgia. Was obsessed with anime as a teen. Still love it. This is the Movie, though. The way Mikuru gets treated by Haruhi is kinda hard to watch though… Introduced me to bunny suits! (Side note: The creator of the bunny suit was a black woman! Zelda Wynn Valdes! Zelda Wynn Valdes did a lot of activism through her fashion and was heavily involved in the Civil Rights movement!).

I know this has nothing to do with anything, but even if I never watched the anime, seeing the face of the girl in Serial Experiments Lain, just unlocked a deep memory in my brain of a weird youtube AMV video of this anime with Gay bar by Electric Six under it.

And nothing, I just had to say it.

Lain is everywhere online honestly. Which is very fitting for her. It’s quite interesting how this character is so widespread but still kinda niche in online culture.

i could not figure out how to set up the game so i just played it in the web browser version. it's still really cool playing it that way, the clunkiness of it is so charming lol.

Yes, that’s the site I was talking about! It’s a cool experience and confusing since you have to figure out the order of events yourself. I wish it would run a little faster, it’s cool at the beginning but gets tedious later, but apparently, that’s just how the game is even on PS1.

i love this video lol

i love that it's purposefully confusing! it is similarly disorienting to play it as it is to watch the show

You can laugh with me or at me, either it’s fine :p

It looks exactly like a “I`m not like other girls” scrapbook, only that it is mine, it is my scrapbook.

Gasp! Am I not like other girls?!

I don’t consume a lot of anime, so this is mostly what I remember loving when I was younger plus Evangelion and Madoka Magica (the Classics)

1 Evangelion - I think everyone and their mother watched this

2 Ojamajo Doremi

3 Kodocha

4 Cardcaptor Sakura

5 Madoka Magica - Like come on now

6 Sugar Sugar Rune - Did you know? The guy that storyboarded Evangelion (Hideaki Anno) also storyboarded this (He wanted to do something similar to Madoka Magica, but they stole his gig)

7 Sailor Moon S

8 Mermaid Melody

9 The rose of Versailles

Ps. If you ever need something that slaps so hard the walls of your house start tumbling down, search the italian opening of Mermaid Melody you will not be the same after.

you did not lie, the italian opening of mermaid melody goes really hard. was that an anime opening or a 90s rave party

RIGHT?! It’s unreal, especially if you compare it to the Japanese one.
They have this almost melancholic tune going on, while we are just busting it down at the club!
