Fun purchases

jan lili - "little person"; often used to refer to children, but can also mean short people, etc.
lili jan - "person part"; would probably refer to something like hair... or body parts.. i don't often see "lili" used this way, but that's the default understanding i would get, i think
jan Lillian - "Lillian person"; following the proper name rules in toki pona, structure is "Headnoun(s) (name)". it's part of the fun with it! the headnouns describe what kind of "thing" that which is being named is! so lots of entities pick something other than "jan"!
like me! in toki pona the proper way to refer to me is lipu Isenlita, because that is the name i chose, thank you very much.

I've been looking into buying a set of reusable earplugs for a while, as my in-ear earphones are really uncomfortable and frustrating when i often only seek the silence and focus they provide, and music itself is often very distracting to me.

I originally looked a bit at concert/orchestra earplugs (as I've used those before and liked them). But the latest video by owiebrainhurs made me look into loop (loop engage 2 plus).

I've now had them for 2 weeks, and really enjoyed them!

  • They're comfortable (regularly forget i'm using them)
  • They block out sound and help focus, but not so much as to be a traffic hazard or hearing every blood-cell in my body wobble-around in my veins.
  • They don't get sweaty in my ears, and can be used for much longer than other earplugs or earphones I've used. [1]

So for filling my original purpose, i'm happy. But these are a little special. Loop engage 2 are advertised to let though regular speech but block out other noise. In practice they're a "low-pass filter", blocking out higher frequencies and white noise more than speech.

So beyond transit, focus, or the grocery-store; I've found them usable in restaurants and work meetings even when i'm with coworkers that expect me to be involved in the conversation. In 1:1 they make speech a bit harder to parse as one would expect from an earplug [2]; but the noise blocking in high-noise environments makes it a-lot easier for me to converse or hear what is said without relying on partial lip-reading [3] or intentionally creating "Airplane ear" [4] [5].

So i'm positively surprised [6]. And the most telling sign is the frantic pocket-tapping i did on the day I left them at home; as i kept instinctively looking for them (despite only having them for 2 weeks now). [7]

  1. i think the acoustic air-channel really helps reduce that ↩︎

  2. They're quick to take out and put back in the ears, so that's swiftly resolved as needed ↩︎

  3. I don't know why or when i became able to do that ↩︎

  4. breathing in sharply while engaging the swallow-muscle, which is a habit I've had since middle-school ↩︎

  5. Not to mention not feeling like an anti-social prick by putting earphones in my ears when someone is talking to me, despite me feeling it helps parse what is said if it's really loud ↩︎

  6. I was sceptical they would really do anything beyond being a decent reusable earplug ↩︎

  7. which led me to tie a ribbon to it for easier finding ↩︎

Did you know Nintendo still makes Hanafuda cards? I knew that's how their business started, but not that they've been continuously making them for 137 years.

Anyway, I bought some:

They're smaller than you might think. Here they are next to that aggressively american root beer from last time.[1]

And here's the cards themselves:
