I’m going to hit y’all with the first actual human in this thread: F1nnster. To nobody’s surprise, they recently came out as genderfluid after years of crossdressing and steadfast support of the trans community. They’re definitely my #1 living nonbinary / genderfluid icon.
Some more that have come to mind:
Ena, wish I could do that with my voice
Kagamine Rin and Len, especially when in fits like this awa
And none of us have mentioned Link yet what are we even doing
I really like Testament from Guilty Gear Strive, they are really cool

i was debating last night on how to word this one, but i think MaoMao from The Apothecary Diaries is one for me.

this creature is sometimes girl, sometimes cat, all times gremlin, but one thing i noticed while watching the anime recently was how often she treats both men and women as separate types of people from whatever she is. she’s just here to eat poisons and not lose her head! (the specific instance that made me start thinking was when she was internal monologuing about how men and women would both be rabid over a certain other character, and then she just continues to stand there bc she doesn’t care)
her English VA is agender too, which is really neat! even if I’m wrong about MaoMao herself, i still relate to her heavily bc of how dense she is from only being interested in her interests :3
Maomao is great and their name makes me smile. I know what sence you are referring to. I remember watching that scene and wondering how Maomao thinkings about themself.
I love the Ena animation stuff! Its so weird and right up my ally.
Rin and Len are always in such cute outfits! I'm so jealous of both of them in this picture.
Doubble trouble from she-ra is also good
I can't believe I didn't think of Link!
This made me think of a couple of musicians I was obsessed with when I was younger (and still listen to and love today, they just aren't in my usual loop that I listen to).
Brian Molko of Placebo:
And Davey Havok from A.F.I:
SoylBot in chat today (i do not believe that one has a forum account as of writing) and the gender talk prompted a slowly simmering thought that i've arrived here to ramble about.
i do want to disclaim first that i don't mean to presume that SoylBot is using these with the same perception that i have, nor is it an argument for using them this way. i just see certain connotations from my experiences that i enjoy and that have been inspiring to me, and that is probably entirely separate from SoylBot's experience.
(but, like, do correct me if i've fucked up on anything, eh?)
now,
royaltygender.
or, the pronouns oft overlooked in common parlance of the modern day.
why the term 'royaltygender'? well, in my time consuming translations of eastern language media (Chinese webnovels, manhua Japanese manga and webnovels and light novels and anime), there's been a lot of translator notes and discussion on how referential status-based pronouns work and flow in English, were we typically in our modern day do not use them in a recognizable capacity. clan leaders, royalty, inherent status baked into grammar choice and obscure pronoun use. this is something that is obviously different depending on what percentage of your social group is linguistically queer, so to speak, but even for the casual weebs out there i would assume they don't really grasp the connotations of 我 (ware) vs 吾輩 (wagahai) vs the numerous forms of 私 (watashi, default reading).
so, uh.
a visual example is probably gonna be helpful.
hm.
let's make a compromise.
One Step for the Dark Lord 1 is in its own right a very good series, but i'll call attention for now (until the reading recommendations thread gets going) to just one of the main characters, Yuria.
she refers to herself with the apellation "this one" in the royal capacity fairly often throughout the series. this is something that i can't verify in an official version due to the time lag in official releases, but i fully support the earlier scanlation work in that decision because it conveys the 'missing' pronoun in English extremely well here. "my royal self" comes up a few times as well, and while not as wieldy in a casual setting, i think those two showcase what i'm talking about.
all this is to say,
to me, royalty pronouns (and by extension deity-reserved pronouns, which do exist in small number) are very Gender™. and they were an early source of enjoyment for me reading fiction, even if i didn't have the slightest inkling of an idea as to why that was the case at the time. i also appreciate them outside of fiction as it's more basis that any pronouns can feel appropriate given that you wear them with confidence (the whole main point of this ramble, if you can believe it all the way down here!).
i think it's also a funny coincidence that royal figures who have more androgynous appearances fall under this same umbrella of inspiration for me.

Just want to share this lovely art I found this morning:
Credit to the artist: laya rose art — mosscap psalmforthewildbuilt and levi...
(@soyl and @Raistlin1357 might especially appreciate)
Another enby inspiration: Najimi from Komi Can’t Communicate.

They take great pleasure in being so ambiguous that no one can tell whether to treat them like a boy or a girl. They are also an extremely social chaos gremlin. In fact I’m pretty sure their gender is just chaos.
This is really nice art! I've seen this person's art once before of Mosscap, but I haven't seen the one you sent before, I love it!
I like how toned down Ruka from Stein’s gate is compared to a lot of different effeminent boys/men. It’s not revealing, just kinda sweet.
I’m jealous honestly
I didn’t search for what enby means until after posting this. Now I’m very confused.
Agreeeeeeeed!
(I`m so happy that this thread has been reborn)
This is Toyosatomimi no Miko from Touhou Project.
Her character is based around a prince, and that makes her pretty interesting gender wise.
I love that her androgyny comes more from her attitude then the design itself.
This is Vflower, a famous Vocaloid.
I think this is the sickest enby drip I have ever seen.
buck from the OA was a huge inspiration for younger me. i even bought a similar coat that he wears and i still wear it to this day, lol.
omg Prince Shotoku my beloved
she's one of my top 3 2hu designs, and another fun part to note is her earmuffs are designed to dull her over-tuned hearing ability, which can make a fun relation to auditory overstim
Be careful, you don`t want me to unleash all of my Touhou headcanons, we will be here all week :p.
Ezra Furman has since come out as a trans woman. Super rad, very happy for her. But also, her gender fluid era was something else.
TWRP! I saw them open for The Protomen in March of 2020, right before everything shut down. I was very tentative about claiming a nonbinary identity at the time, like maybe it wasn’t mine to claim or something. At some point in the show they addressed the crowd with something like “ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in between, because we know it’s not always that simple,” in the most heartfelt way, and I just cried. That was a big turning point for me. Really cool to see them here.
There many fantastic and gender characters in touhou but this got the gender coded and asd?? So cool, I love when they convey gender strongly through vibes too
VFlower!

(They're not in the mv, but they are singing the song)
also don't let quiet threads stop you from postimg in them! And maybe I'd love to hear about your 2hu head cannons ![]()
Also me @_@

They have a lot of great songs and features, also the dripppppppp
I look forward to seeing them in even more swagged out enby fits in the future
Thats sick! I love both TWRP and the Protomen!
Song they did together that absolutely slaps
