How Flags Work
Beep boop, hi everyone! This is an informational post about how flags work on the site. I've seen the occasional misunderstanding about them, and it's an important topic!
When you flag a post, you'll get a little window asking you to explain why you're flagging the post and you can't press the submit button until you've selected a reason. So, it's actually pretty hard to accidentally flag a post:
Once the flag is submitted, Hyde and I get an icon for it that's pretty hard to ignore:
While I don't want to make any hard promises about how quickly we process flags, I'd say we get to them pretty quick![1] I'm pretty active on here and Hyde knows when I'm not available so they can make sure to keep an extra eye out :3
When a flag does come through, one (or more likely both) of us check it immediately to make sure there isn't any imminent danger that needs to be mitigated on the spot, e.g. something bad or illegal being posted, a 'phobe popping up, etc.[2] If the flag isn't that, it's often something rather nuanced like two users' differing values/needs colliding. For those more nuanced flags, Hyde and I tend to hold on to them for a bit so that we can sleep on it and talk it through when we're calm and rested. Often we're looking to see if there's a broader pattern we can address as in Please do not micro-aggression cis people.

I should also say that we do go look at the context where the flag happened. So if you flag something in Blanket Fort, I scroll up to that conversation and read what was going on to make sure that I understand where the flag is coming from.
