How do you use our forum reactions emotes?

Hiiii :blossom: This is a silly topic and feels like a very stupid question,, and maybe i'm the only one being confused (hopefully not).

Hear me out: we’ve got some very specific reactions emojis[1] (:hot_beverage::umbrella_with_rain_drops::sauropod:) and i've been wondering for a while how am i supposed to use them, if that makes sense.... Curious what each one means to you / in what situation you use them?

For :heart: and :potted_plant: it's pretty straight-forward to me, i think? I use them as a "like button" and a bit similar to how i use flowers emotes, just stuff i want to give support to!
For "hot beverage" or the coffee/hot chocolate one :hot_beverage: , i don't use it unless a bunch of gardeners react only with that, but I have no idea what's it for???
:fish: Just feels like one for silly things, but not sure...
:horse_face: looks very silly and seems to be used by folks for silly stuff! i do use it for that at least
:umbrella_with_rain_drops: for upsetting/sad posts, especially in vent channels, but i'm not very sure
:sauropod: no idea, i'm so lost
:thinking: I guess for messages that are weird/gives you something to think about? it always confuses me

Please help, I'm not sure if I'm stupid or just "too" neurodivergent for this- I might be overthinking a little....

No No it’s fine .w. actually your reasoning and intepretations are solid

Largely I just kinda use the hand :palm_down_hand: for pats/pets or like a “there there”

The :horse_face: when im feeling silly

And a heart for a like I enjoy the colored hearts a lot.

i'm not speaking with any authority here[1] , but here's my takes on how i use/interpret them!

  • :heart: for general appreciation of something.
  • :potted_plant: for a more abstract supportive vibe of appreciation. the way you'd gift someone a plant in the hopes of them taking care of it and watching it grow.
  • :hot_beverage: for a more direct supportive vibe of appreciation. the way you'd make someone a cup of their beverage of choice after a rough day.
  • :fish: honestly the only use i've identified for them is posts relating to fish (animal) or fish (hazel), but there's situations where :fish: is used and those don't apply...?[2]
  • :horse_face: for silly/goofy posts, or ones containing or relating to horses.
  • :umbrella_with_rain_drops: for showing support to sad posts, i think you got it spot on.
  • :sauropod: either dinosaurs or (redfire)yoshi or also as of yet unknown meaning.
  • :thinking: always confuses me too, and i sometimes think it can come off a little... passive aggressive(?) but in my opinion the yellow balances out the colours in the picker nicely :3.

i really relate to the overthinking, but i usually (try to) hit it with a "quietly analysing the chaos for patterns" (with mixed success, but it works here (for me)).

also interesting garden lore, yoshi, thanks for sharing!

It’s ok it’s not random at all. Chicken Butt 420 is not how I usually go by online. And quite frankly I prolly made up the name when I was drunk kinda like a “HA HA I SAID THE FUNNY NUMBER!”
My humor is immature.

My online handle I go by now everywhere is “AcoustiCat” I’ll prolly rename myself to that once I figure out how
But as of rn I’ve been Chicken Butt 420 in the forum for 2 years so I’ll prolly stay that way

I dont really care what ppl call me. As long as it aint like a slur or something. Usually people here like Lilian just call me “Chicken” which is fine by me.

The way i use emoji is probbly not very special but it is more or less like this for me:

  • :heart: Just generally liking something or sending love
  • :potted_plant: For eepy people who gonna/gotto sleep and things with nature/plants.
  • :hot_beverage: For people waking up or just to sit a moment and think.
  • :fish: Somewhat for silly things or things to do with fish
  • :horse_face: I use this more commonly for silly stuff (and also horse stuff)
  • :umbrella_with_rain_drops: For sad things and showing compassion, giving someone in the rain a umbrella?
  • :sauropod: For silly stuff, i like how the dino is turning its head, it is looking away (and yoshi)
  • :thinking: This if for when a post makes me think or if i do not entierly understand things

In any case i like mixing things up, :heart:'s are fun but i like using the others as well :)

:thinking: I use this when someone pointed out something i had not thought about or clarifies something for me, Or a reaction to a question when i too don't know the answer. Something akin to "interesting" or "mm, i see". Similar in vibe to :memo: for "i'm writing that down"

The other reacitons i generally agree with the others here. :sauropod: this did not register as dinodance for me, but i'm not that active on the twitch side to follow the meme about dinodance.

Avid coffee reaction reactor here. I have no idea what the coffee reaction means, I just click on it and a coffee appears. Neurons activate. I am rewarded, so I am more likely to do it again in the future.

I am very much in favor of everyone using forum reactions how they want to, and building their own meaning out of them. The last thing I’d want is for someone to experience stress at putting “the wrong emoji for something” because of strict agreed upon definitions.

That being said, how I interpret these emotes are usually:

:heart: : I love this, I enjoy it, I want to show that I care about it

:potted_plant: : I enjoy this post, and it also positively contributes to the overall mood and feeling of the conversation. In other words, this is a “garden-core” post. This is also the lillian :heart: , from a certain way of looking at it

:hot_beverage: : Similar to :potted_plant: , but in a more relaxing way. Kind of a mid point between :potted_plant: and :umbrella_with_rain_drops: , in the sense that it’s like “I made you a hot beverage for your really brainy post because it seems like you may benefit from it”. This can also mean “this post is really relaxing or the person posting this deserves some relaxation”

:fish: : Fish. I almost see it as an off-brand :horse_face: . I do not use it with any consistency

:horse_face: : A horse-type thought. Being silly.

:umbrella_with_rain_drops: : As other gardeners have mentioned, I use this for vent-type posts because it’s like giving someone an umbrella to shield them from the emotions. It’s protection from the pain of the outside world.

:sauropod: : Yoshi-exclusive. Even if I could use this[1], I wouldn’t know how

:thinking: : Probably the only emote I use neutrally, this is if I’m considering/thinking about a post and what it says. If it’s a joke or something silly, this can be read more like a comedic straight-man type response of “hmmm I’m not sure if that’s true”, otherwise I am genuinely thinking about the post
