Active Hobbies

the Rogaining section of the maps thread reminded me, i’ve been meaning to ask about those sorts of interests (probably since the Urbex thread started). sadly, while i am a collector of hobbies, i can’t frame this as “i want to absorb all of your exercise plans” because i’m a little bit allergic (literal) to going outside too much! but i am still interested to hear what everyone does to keep active, or if there’s any advice on keeping up habits when work and other hobbies love to sit you down in a chair. i keep falling off my plans…

as for myself, i really love cycling! ever since i was a kid. it is very freeing (sometimes too freeing, as i’ve gotten in trouble a few times for zoning out on a trail or on a group ride), feeling the wind around me and seeing the world with a different eye than when i’m just walking around on foot. the covid years and settling in to a job after graduation really knocked me out of regular exercise, and between that and the need to replace my old bike i recently purchased an ebike to help with the asthma and amount of hills when going anywhere. still out of shape, but once the pollen surge subsides i should be able to enjoy riding again (and maybe eventually i can use that for my commutes in to work rather than suffering in a car. big maybe). infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired here, but if i’m being entirely honest, i feel less safe in a vehicle than on a bike, and it’s also just less enjoyable.

on weekends, when i’m able to (and the DST shift has made this a bit harder), i also visit a dojo! that’s 2 links. sorry, i just enjoy doing that sometimes. but kyudo is something i was very lucky to come across here, since it’s a lower-activity martial art and helps me a lot with remembering to correct my terrible posture. i’m not a very spiritual person, but i do appreciate the ‘form’ focus of martial arts since it helps me put the brakes on my brain and it’s something i can do even on days when my asthma is worse.

i used to go climbing once a week but it got too expensive and i had too manny injuries/ illnesses i stay active at work tho and i have to do stretches in my free time (it should be like an hour a day but i dont) to make sure my body is working efficiently

i do like mountainbikeing but i find outside activity you have to travel too dificult and anoyying so i was into running for a bitdespite my asthma aswell greatly improved my lungs before they became swiss cheese ill probably start running again soon

I’m so jealous you were able to find a Kyudo Dojo. I would be tempted to do that if I had one near me.

My main hobby is SCUBA diving. I haven’t gotten out for a long time to go diving due to many excuses mainly because I don’t want to socialize and don’t have a support buddy to go with.

I like gardening and planting. I don’t really have the space for it right now. I was inspired by Its_ameise’s post in #Moss appreciation to get a Moss Terrarium kit. I got it in the mail today. Hopefully I’ll get some time soon to put it together to have some cute little mosses to take care of. c:

Woah SCUBA diving, that’s so cool! You really are a turtle :3

I really feel the struggle of finding a good person or group to do hobbies with. Especially with asd, even if you find someone you like that enjoys it unless they are also autistic about the hobby you’re both probably not gonna enjoy it in the same way and intensity.

I’m so excited for the moss terrarium! Little moss friends coming soon. As a turtle would you cultivate pretty mosses on your shell? That could be cool

Health problems are the worst, I hope you can be feeling fit again soon. Some of my friends are really into climbing, I find it fun too but oof yeah the climbing gyms are so expensive.
Mountain biking is so fun but I don’t do it much for the same reason as you said. There’s a decent mtb park at the edge of my city, maybe I should move out there just so I can ride to it lol

big mood on the stretches; i know my body is paying for my slacking but with how the brain gets hung up on everything i find the days’ flown by before i can properly warm up for exercise or flexibility.

i wish you the best of luck on getting back into running!

(prolonged sound of awe)

i do sometimes wish i lived nearer the coast so i could get into natural swimming; i can’t swim very well but like you mentioned with the socializing issues i think the constant mill of people in indoor pools and other social issues (plus, like, i cannot stand chlorine) kept me from properly learning or enjoying that as a kid. but the SCUBA is super cool, and i do love the ocean! even if i only enjoy it vicariously most of the time

and yes, very looking forward to hearing about the moss terrarium :eyes:

Thanks everyone, it was a 6 hour event, pushed to the limit and over especially at the end, was late by 41 seconds :sob:. Lost 20 or our 680 points for that but it was a crazy good effort to make it not worse than that.

Im cooked like a chook. Done like a dinner. Im going to hurt so much tomorrow

compare to actual route:

We went clockwise and you can see how much we had to cut off. Clockwise starts flatter and would’ve probs been the smarter way to go, get the easy points on the board, better to have to give up harder points if you have to cut stuff. Most people went anti clockwise re-enforcing this view.
