Video Game Music Appreciation Thread

I really loved the song played on the title screen of Burnout Dominator when I was playing it on PS2 as a kid, this game was my first Burnout game ever.

There are also two other versions for this song :

The original one used for Burnout 2 (on which the previous one was based on)

The Burnout Paradise version

And in Burnout Paradise the 2 other versions are also present since the OST of this game reuse a lot of music from the older games (mainly Dominator).

In terms of licensed songs my favorite one back then was this

My english was terrible back then (I’m French) so I understood approximatively 0% of the lyrics, but I really liked the way it sounded.

Skyrim:
Celeste:

Guilty Gear:

I’m too lazy to put Terraria, Stardew or Ror2 music here rn lmao

Other Notable Tracks off the top of my head:

I cannot believe this thread is this deep and only one singular Sonic the Hedgehog song has been mentioned so far tbh. Absolute banger of a series with regards to OSTs, especially when it comes to vocal tracks - Sonic Frontiers had fucking Kellin Quinn from Sleeping with Sirens on the soundtrack and it goes absolutely insanely hard.

Tomoya Ohtani - Undefeatable feat. Kellin Quinn - Sonic Frontiers
Tomoya Ohtani - Break Through It All feat. Kellin Quinn - Sonic Frontiers
Tomoya Ohtani - I’m Here: Revisited feat. Kellin Quinn - Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon

They also got J-rock band ONE OK ROCK to do a credits theme for them, which might actually be one of my favorite songs of 2022.

ONE OK ROCK - Vandalize - Sonic Frontiers

The album release is uncensored, and the lyric ā€œfight the pain away / my head is in ruinsā€ becomes ā€œfuck the pain away / my bed is in ruinsā€, and I think that means there is officially at least one Sonic song with the word ā€œfuckā€ in it. (His World from Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 had ā€˜ass’ in it though, in-game and uncensored, though…so.)

On a similar note, these aren’t inherently video game songs, but they were licensed for BIT.TRIP RUNNER for WiiWare and that’s where we found them, so they’re going here too.

Anamanaguchi - Title Theme (Blackout City) - BIT.TRIP RUNNER
Anamanaguchi - Credits Theme (Mermaid) - BIT.TRIP RUNNER

And some of our favorite rhythm game originals, for good measure.

REDALiCE - MERLIN - Groove Coaster
kz(Livetune) - Catch the Wave feat. Hatsune Miku - Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix
mafumafu & Nightcord at 25:00 - A Future Written As Regret - Project Sekai: Colorful Stage

I’m sure I’ll think of more later but these are some standouts to me, avoiding some of the obvious like Persona tracks.

These 2 songs feel so tense, especially considering that they are only played when challenging a boss.

And this one is the best while cruising on the highway between duels.

While this song is also present in Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2, I personally prefer the version appearing in TXR Zero.

I've been listening to the Crusader OST lately.

Never played those games, but the music is awesome.
Just good mid-90s tracker music.

Favorite so far:

And here's the full soundtrack for both games:

Can we just appreciate what an experience the original Cave Story was?

Picture this: It's Christmas 2004. Steam is that weird downloader Valve want you to use to play Half-Life 2. "Indie game" isn't a commonly used phrase yet, unlike "bedroom programmer".

Someone sends you a link to some Japanese dude's personal homepage.

You read this (translated):

Cave Story is a jumping-and-shooting action game.
Explore the caves until you reach the ending.
You can also save your game and continue from where you left off.

You download and start the game. There is some flavor text and then you're in a place called "Start Point".

You go through a door and you're in "First Cave".

Everything until this point is carefully crafted to make you think Cave Story is just some random guy's amateur game project. And it kinda is. But it's also one of the most successful indie games of all time.

...aaaaand it has good music too I guess.

Tag yourself: Did you play the fan translation ("Huzzah!") or the official Nicalis one ("Oh Yeaaah!!")?

Little personal anecdote: Back in 2009 or so I would often listen to the radio in bed. One night this catchy tune came on. I didn't have a smartphone yet, so I had no way to record it or look it up in any way. The melody stayed with me for months.

Then I played Cave Story and met Jenka the witch.

this game has a great soundtrack, please recommend other cozy horror games to me (this one is sad though, and CW for stuff in the title and some other spoilery stuff, can read about it on the game page if you want)

Also, Rain World

The last song really contrast with the chaotic nature of Motorstorm

i have to post this, it shot into my top 10 tracks without warning
this musical style is amazingly beloved to me, and elements of it scratch my neurons in a perfect way (especially the instrument that's layered in around 2:55 and 4:35)

Back in the days of yore when dial-up modems roamed the earth, a little website called LEGO.com hosted a bunch of flash games. One of them was this little gem:

That music is burned into my brain. Here's a complete playlist.

And the game is fun too. Much like dial-up internet, flash is long gone now, but someone remade it in HTML5!

Sadly without the awesome music :sob:
