the whole mario vs donkey kong 2 ost is so good, and i recommend both the game and the music to anyone who can manage to find it, but it seems nintendo keeps this thing under wraps. here’s a youtube link to one of my favorite tracks, which i can’t promise will be there forever:
then there’s drawn to life: the next chapter, which i personally love, but i feel like the game might be hard to recommend. i feel like playing the first game adds to the experience of the second, but the first game is very rough in comparison. if you do get through it, you’ll get to hear many tracks in the sequel which improve on the tracks of the first! here’s the villain’s theme, a threat in both games, and a banger made absolute by the second game’s new coat of paint:
and finally, i literally cannot go into a conversation about video game music without mentioning dark souls, please play a dark souls if you can- anyways, i’ll avoid mentioning any actual boss themes because i’d bring up some tales that ought be placed in another topic. i’ll just provide a song that is in no way related to any boss whatsoever:
that one is a nearly unused track that was repurposed for a ps4 menu background, which i have and enjoy watching. the title of it is “transitory lands,” and it’s styled in an ink-and-parchment aesthetic with a character who walks along the path through the world of dark souls 3. https://youtu.be/n3QPZlqtOgY?si=lpsQObgH2o-nkgj0 if you feel like viewing that in action.
Cassette Beasts has a great OST, here’s the song from the main story’s “victory lap”
Some game OSTs make heavy use of leitmotifs (little musical ideas that are repeated in multiple places) and I think it really trains your brain to appreciate all of it.
Curse Crackers is a great lil GBC style platformer that more people should play. I love love love this town theme. The rest of the music is great too. If you check out the rest though, I’m gonna warn you that you deserve to listen to The Belle Tolls in context before you listen to it on loop on YouTube.
Bro Cassette Beasts slaps. I am quite happy to own the official Cassette. Game does not get enough love.
From The Long Dark, heres The New World and Travel. Both really encapsulate a feeling of being dreafully alone, but also being at peace.
Next I’ve got… a lot. From Genshin Impact. The game has its faults, but its OST is far from one of them. There’s a lot of tracks in the game, at least 1k according to most youtube playlists.
I don’t think I saw anyone mention it, but the disco elysium sound track is maybe one of my favorites! It’s a good listen alone but it also fits the game so well. From the theme to setting the songs are amazing!
Hello! I mentioned I would post a few more obscure songs that I enjoy. This is that reply.
This song is from the not-so obscure horror game, “Ib”. It is both calm and haunting:
The next track comes from “CrossCode”. This track plays when the protagonist, Lea, fights… another version of themselves, to avoid spoilers. It uses many leitmotifs from Lea’s original theme:
Here is one of the ending songs from the game “SIGNALIS”. The protagonist made a promise. If you are paying attention, you may notice that this song is actually a rendition of one of Chopin’s classics, Raindrop Prelude (Op. 28 No. 15):
Okay so two games I've got to say about
First of all, the Rust soundtrack.
It's really calming and serene and when your playing in an empty part of the map it really pushes that feeling of loneliness.
My two favourites from the soundtrack are probably "Closed Circuit" for combat and "Umbra" for normal gameplay.
And second, From the Depths, more specifically, the title themes.
I don't know what really clicks about it but the heavier, industrial and "corrosive"(as I've heard similar things called) that the stronger factions have really meshes well with the game's big feeling combat and the weight of feels it has. My No.1 favourite track is probably "Never Stop", from the title screen, but if I could pick some more I would also include "Chasmln Time" From the Twin Guard and 'Systems Check", again from the main menu. However, the calmness between combat in adventure mode I really feel is pushed further with the tracks that play liked "Aftershock" "Paper Son and Miłotz S.-Clouds", which are both listed under title themes in the linked playlist.
At first, I thought I would write something to every song, but then I remembered more and more songs, and yeah, no, maybe not. I am sure I am forgetting some, too.
I’ve said it a lot, but Evergrace has by far my favorite OST of all time. Its so unique and colorful, I could listen to it forever, admittedly, its just a tinge less chaotic in game
I don’t listen to as much VGM as i used to and, i want to get back into it but here are some standouts to me right now
"The Grab Bag"
Kowloon's Gate
Kowloon’s gate is a game i know absolutely nothing about, unfortunately it is a semi obscure untranslated ps1 game, so the barrier to info is rather high. Maybe ill go look up a play-through at some point. Town of Water
The use of the vocal sample in this one is almost evergrace esq: Kowloon’s Gate Hong Kong Supreme Feng Shui Council
Rez
Rez is a futuristic racing(?) game, the OST is mostly like dance oriented, but these are made by one of the guys from influential glitch group Oval, or at least i think they are? I know one is a medley of old Oval tracks. Octaeder 0.1. P-project (Trancemission)
Unfortunately this one is just a snippit, but ough the ambience: Options Theme
Okay so to preface this I download a lot of my songs and most of them are video game osts I have the entire Signalis ost in my playlist with some of my favorites being
Yeessss! I love Signalis music so much! Even though some of the tracks make me cry when remembering those scenes in the game. I’ll also sometimes listen to Cigarette Wife while at work since the intensity helps me focus!
To continue the thread, another Signalis track I liked is Riot Control because the imagery within the track! It plays when fighting enemies with riot shields and the track sounds like marching and then banging on shields with batons
