Furusato (ę•…éƒ·) - Japanese, home place

Here’s a great series of video essays about Animal Crossing, furusato, and anarchist communism.

From the video (still watch it it’s so good)

You’re probably already familiar with the way furusato looks thanks to Japanese media exports: Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, Mushi-shi, Okami, even Ocarina of Time. One could argue that PokĆ©mon even builds on furusato tropes. Furusato functions as a shorthand for cultural nostalgia connected to village life that no longer exists, often represented as an ā€œidyllic non-existent countryside home, a far away place in the past.ā€

Oh, but you see… It’s even deeper than that. Ennui, boredom, listlessness. But perhaps listed. It’s a list of listlessness. The listless list. Also kinda has the word listen in it, but that’s happenstance.

Oh my… Here I was believing it was Listen nui… And you improvised that joke. But Rinion just actually played into your long con joke by saying they liked the word ennui.

From that same Wikipedia article: peculiarities
As in ā€œThe haplodiploid sex-determination system has a number of peculiarities.ā€

And yes, avast is another good one. Nautical slang in general has some nice words, like hulk, sloop, pontoon, amidships, doldrums, flotsam and jetsam, etc.

Some new additions to my list:

  • Obfuscate - I've always loved this one, it was a mistake to have left it out
  • Asperities - Specifically in material science context, where they're just the name of microscopic surface defects that prevent objects from having more perfect contact
  • Desquamation - Cursed. moving on.
  • Oxaziridine - A really cool and useful molecule with only 1 each of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (and a few hydrogen, naturally). Elements 678. Beautiful. Just look at it for a bit.

    More dishonorable words:

    • squelch - Circuit to suppress signal noise if signal is too weak
    • squelching - when a DNA transcription activator blocks gene activation or something
    • Skwal - Snowboarding on a single ski instead, basically
Why the hell is squelching so unrelated to squelch? The world is a fucked up place. That's why.
