So I just learned that when Insomniac Games were looking to follow up the Spyro series with a new one for the upcoming Playstation 2, this was one of the ideas they cooked up before settling on Rachet and Clank.
Oh my goodness is the protagonist gender. A dashing knight even!
Not only are they gender non conforming, they look both strong and tough like a knight, yet also agile and dexterous like a cat! Somehow cohesively being many contrasting ideas at once, very enby! >:3
And all the equipment being living monsters with different forms, its so cool and unique.
And the designs of protagonist, monsters and world are so good!
I am longing for a game that was never made. Of course its hard to be disappointed with getting Rachet and Clank instead, a series I loved and played a lot of as a kid. [1]
If I played this game back then I'm sure this protagonist sure would've activated young slowmaths brain.
A little write up about the game and a heap more of the concept art and design docs can be found here. Well worth a look and read! [2] [3]
and invented the quick wheel for quick swapping weapons! Gosh Insomniac were so on fire back then, started as 2 guys and a dream and by the time they built their team and expertise for their 2nd game they made frickin Spyro, then followed that trilogy up with Rachet and Clank?? Holy hecc ↩︎
It's crazy to think that the only reason all this isn't just confined to an old binder at the back of an office is that a game journalist interviewing the founder and CEO Ted Price about the company's history asked specifically about this time period, and Ted decided to dig this out and share it, and then that journalist was allowed to document it ↩︎
this was a game so obscure even internally at Insomniac that long-time employees who later saw it had no idea it existed. I'm so happy that it was brought out and shared ^v^ ↩︎
